Mortgage rates eased again this week, with the average 30-year fixed rate falling to 7.24%, Freddie Mac's weekly survey shows. That is the second straight weekly drop, after the rate matched a series high of 7.4% in mid-October. Mortgage Rates — national, weekly +2

Two weeks of relief after a record climb

The 30-year rate had been climbing through September and early October, reaching 7.4% the week of October 15, the highest level since the count began in October 2024. It held at that same 7.4% the week before, on October 8, before easing. Since then it has fallen for two weeks running, first to 7.32% and now to 7.24%. The 15-year fixed rate followed the same path, easing to 6.6% from 6.68% the week before. Mortgage Rates — national, weekly +3

Even after the recent dip, the rate sits above where the count started. It was 6.72% in the series' first week, back in October 2024, so the current rate is still higher than that. Rates have also been considerably lower than this during the stretch Freddie Mac tracks, dipping to 5.98% in late February 2026. Mortgage Rates — national, weekly

What this means for local borrowers

Freddie Mac's figures are national averages, not the rate any single lender in New Carlisle is quoting this week. Still, the direction matters: after months of increases, both the 30-year and 15-year averages have now eased for two weeks in a row. The average 30-year rate across the stretch Freddie Mac has measured since October 2024 works out to about 6.58%, so this week's 7.24% remains above that long-run average.
